Samuel Augustus MAVERICK

City #1 Cemetery
Bexar County,
Texas

Samuel Agustus Maverick, born in Pendelton, Sourth Carolina on 23 Jul 1803. He died 2
September 1870 after a brief illness.

Samuel Agustus Mavrick moved to Texas in 1835. He arrived in San Antonio, Texas, just before the siege of Bexar began and was put under house arrest. He kept a diary of the siege that has provided a wonderful record of the siege. He was released on December 1 from house arrest. He remained in San Antonio after the siege and in February was elected on of two delegates from the Alamo garrison to the independence convention scheduled for March 1, 1836 at Washington-on-the Brazos.

In 1844 he moved his family to Matagorda Bay where they made their home until October 1847. When Sam returned permanently to San Antonio he left a small herd of cattle on Matagorda Peninsula with some caretakers. It was this herd that was allowed to wander and gave rise to the term 'maverick,' which denotes an unbranded calf. These cattle were eventually rounded up by Sam and his two oldest sons in about 1854 and they drove the cattle to what is today Floresville and sold them in 1856.

He also served as the Mayor of San Antonio in 1839. He served as a Democrat in the Fourth through Ninth State Legislature (1851-1863). He was one of three sucession commissioners appointed by the Texas Secession Convention and they successfully negotiated the removal of the Federal troops and the transfer of Federal stores in Texas to the state government.
