At the age of 15 years, he took his father's place in the ranks of the Confederacy and participated in the bloody siege of Vicksburg, as well as being in other noted battles. He was a private in Co. G, 31st Mississippi regiment, Featherstone's brigade, Loring's division, Stewart's corps. Mr. Manahan was a member of Joseph E. Johnston camp, U.C.V. and was the only living member of the 31st Mississippi regiment except Judge J. Hall, so far as Mr. Hall's knowledge goes.
