LA MARQUE —John Austin Bruce Terry, Sr., 77, of La Marque, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013. Bruce was born on December 8, 1935 to Helen Hawley and James D. Terry, Sr. in Charleston, West Virginia. A lifetime resident of La Marque, Bruce moved to Texas when he was very young and graduated from La Marque High School in 1953. Throughout his high school years, Bruce was a member of the National Honor Society, and lettered in both baseball and basketball.
After graduation, he attended Texas A&M University and graduated with Distinguished Military Honors in 1958. Anyone who knew Bruce knew he was proud to call himself an Aggie. As a student at A&M, he was recognized as Outstanding Fish, Outstanding Sophomore, and lettered in softball. He was the President of the Galveston County A&M Students Club, and the Commanding Officer of C-AAA in the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets. Bruce joined the United States Army Reserve as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1958 and retired as a Captain in 1969.
Bruce was very involved in community projects and organizations; he was the president of the La Marque JayCee’s from 1964-1965, was listed as the Outstanding State VP for the Texas JayCee’s and in the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1967. He held the position as Chairman of the Board of the CEFCU multiple times throughout the years and was Chairman of the United Way in 1983. At one time he was on the Board of Directors for the La Marque Aid and Guidance as well as the Galveston County Boys and Girls Club. Bruce was the Treasurer of the La Marque Teen Center and held the position as Treasurer for the La Marque Crime Stoppers for many years. A member of the La Marque Rotary Club, Bruce held the position of Secretary, Vice President, and President, and was a multiple time Paul Harris Fellow and Benefactor. He loved Rotary and hoped they would have Rotary in Heaven.

He worked at Union Carbide (UCC) for 38 years and retired in 1997. For years he loved bowling, but more than that he loved fast pitch softball. Many will remember him taking the mound to play the game that was so dear to him.
Bruce is preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Helen Lewis and Jim Lewis, his father and step-mother, J.D. Terry, Sr. and Rita Carver Terry, his two brothers, J.D. “Pete” Terry, Jr. and Steve Terry, and two sons Jay David Terry and James Bradford Terry. He is Survived by his son J.A. Bruce Terry, Jr. and wife Julie of Santa Fe, his daughter LeeAnn Crowder and husband Bim of Dickinson, his grandchildren, Bruce Terry III, Blaine Terry, Madison Terry, James Crowder III and wife Katie, Mark Crowder, Lori Crowder, Toban Crowder and Rilee Crowder, and six great-grandchildren. Bruce is also survived by his sisters, Susan Scarbrough of California and Jan Tennent and husband Reg of Alabama, his brother Doug Terry and wife Susan of Virginia, his many nieces and nephews, and his ex-wife and friend for always Rosalie Terry.
Visitation will be held at the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque, Friday, December 6, 2013 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. A funeral service will begin at 5:00, with Dr. Mike Deaton officiating.
