Jimmie Odis Cottrell is dead. Borger's seven-year-old cancer victim died this morning at 7:34 at the North Plains Hospital, where he was taken a few days ago upon his return from Dallas.
Stricken over a year ago with the disease, many efforts were made to save Jimmie's life. He was taken to clinics in Amarillo, Lubbock, Dallas and other places. Medicine from Pittsburgh, Penn., was ordered to help him in his fight, but all efforts failed. The medicine from Pittsburgh did help him in the last days, as it relieved the swelling and made him rest more comfortable.
During the past two months, area residents helped to make his last few days more enjoyable as a dance and auto races were sponsored, and various coin collections taken up to aid his fight.
Survivors other than the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman O. Cottrell, of 701 Hobby, include one brother, Victor Don, 2 years old, his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ogle, of Twitty, Texas, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Cottrell, of Brownfield, Texas.
Funeral services will be held in the First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Paul Cullen, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jack Williford, pastor of the Tenth Street Baptist Church.
Interment will be made in the Highland Park Cemetery, under the direction of Minton Funeral Home.
The body will lie in state at Minton's until time for the service Sunday.
