Although his heart was punctured by a bullet, Simeon Hull probably could have been saved had he been taken to North Plains hospital quicker than he was after being shot yesterday afternoon, Dr. R.E. Minter said this morning.

The heart was stopped from time of the shooting until Hull reached the hospital, where after an operation performed by Dr. Minter, assisted by Dr. A.F. Hanson, it began beating again. The beat continued 20 minutes.

In the operation the pericardium, or sac around the heart, was opened to relieve blood pressure caused by the wound, and the wound was sewed. Result of the operation, coupled with use of salt solution, was immediate resumption of the beat.

Delay in taking Hull to the hospital gave time for blood coagulation in the veins, Dr. Minter said, and ruined the excellent chance for recovery of the patient. The blood in the pericardium was found to be slightly clotted. Coupled with the clotting was heavy loss of blood.

Dr. Minter explained that he was summoned to the scene of the shooting by a person who had an automobile. The doctor went to the scene in that car, and while he was examining the wounded young man the car was driven away to bring Hull's mother to her son. The doctor finally stopped a passing car and took Hull to the hospital in it. No telephone was near for calling an ambulance.

The operation he performed is fairly common now and is successful, Dr. Minter explained. He saw it done when he was an intern, but yesterday was the first time he had opportunity to try it himself.

In a statement to police after the shooting, Melvin Moser, 21, said he and Hull were "scuffling" with a gun and that he pulled the trigger not knowing the gun was loaded.

Coroner John Smith said today that an inquest into the death would be conducted by him some time tomorrow. No charge had been filed in the case this morning.

Simeon Wesley Hull was 30 years old and was a truckman. He was born in Dewey, Okla. He lived at 200 Monroe street with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Hull. Surviving him are his parents, a brother, Joe Albert, 18, a sister Betty Lou, 8, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Snellgrove, also Borger residents.

The young man was a member of the First Christian church, where Rev. L.O. Byerly will conduct funeral services at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be Highland cemetery.
