Explosion of a 16,000 barrel horizontal gasoline tank in the yards of the Danube Refinery, west of Borger, took the life of Frank Larkin Swaffar, 44, at 8:30 o'clock last night.
Swaffar, fireman and general yard helper, was transferring gasoline from one tank to another at the time of the blast. Ten pounds of gas pressure is used in the transfer and it is believed either the pressure had been increased in some unknown manner or the gasoline was not leaving the tank. The employee, who had been working for the company for nine months, had gone around the tank, apparently to open a valve and was directly in the path of the explosion as it blew out one side of the tank.
His body was thrown ten feet away by the force. His head was badly crushed and both legs broken.
The horizontal tank was holding about eighty barrels of gasoline at the time, the fluid spreading over the area but not igniting.
Funeral services are pending arrival of relatives. The Carver Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Swaffar is a World War veteran and had been in Borger for the past 8 years. He is a former employee of the H.A. Hawkins Service Station and had been employed with other firms in and about this city.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Letha Swaffar; mother, Mrs. Alice Swaffar; daughter, Daveda Swaffar, 16; three step-children, Billy, 11, Charlene, 13, Narcele, 9; three brothers, Oscar, Alfred, and Johnnie, all of Borger; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Crawford of Bowlegs, Okla., and Mrs. Eva Tannehill of Sunray.
