Funeral services for J.M. Herd, pioneer of this county and resident of Wheeler, were conducted Monday afternoon of last week at the Wheeler Baptist church, following his death Sunday morning.

The deceased had been in ill health the past year and recently suffered a paralytic stroke from which he failed to recover.

Mr. Herd was born Feb. 6, 1864, in Hancock county, Tenn. He was married in 1885 to Miss Sally Rich [sic] and to this union were born three daughters, Mrs. J.M. Anderson, Sweetwater, Okla., Mrs. W.P. Yarbrough, Texola, Okla., and Mrs. S.A. Maxwell, Wheeler.

After the death of his first wife, he was married to Mary Louise Rich [sic] on April 3, 1893. To them were born 11 children, seven of whom are living. They are: Mrs. H.H. Dearman and Mrs. H.O. Harget, Tahoka; E.H., H.H., Miss Bessie and Roy Herd, and Mrs. L.T. Crowder, Wheeler.

Besides his wife and 10 children, he is survived by 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. All the immediate relatives attended the funeral except two grandchildren, Mrs. Pauline Engile and daughter, Tahoka, and Elmer and son of Santa Anna, Calif.

Interment was in the Wheeler cemetery.
