SHAMROCK, March 4 - S.E. Walker, 55 years old, farmer of Locust Grove Community, 12 miles northeast of here, was fatally shot here Wednesday afternoon about 5:30 in an altercation with John Belflower, 45 years old, a neighbor. Walker died in the general hospital here at 8:30 o'clock.

The argument preceding the shooting took place on the sidewalk of Shamrock's principal business street. Although several persons saw the shooting, none were able to give many details.

Belflower was immediately arrested and taken to the county jail at Wheeler. A formal charge of murder was filed against him following Walker's death by County Attorney C.C. Fillmore. The charge was filed here in the court of Judge W.B. Wofford, justice of the peace.

The bullet, fired from a 30-30 calibre rifle, entered Walker's left side just above the hip and slightly to the back, severing the spine.

In a statement made to the county attorney and justice of the peace about an hour before he died, Walker said he did not know Belflower was going to shoot and had turned his back. He also made further statements calculated to throw light on the case, but officers refused to divulge the information.

In a signed statement made early Wednesday night before County Attorney Fillmore at Wheeler, Belflower is said to have attributed the fatal altercation to a recent insult to his wife by Walker. Mrs. Belflower witnessed the shooting.

The men met Monday afternoon on the sidewalk of the principal business street in Shamrock, according to information given out from the statement by the county attorney. An argument followed.

Belflower declared that Walker refused to apologize to Mrs. Belflower, who was sitting in the family car at the curb, the statement continued.

Belflower said he then stepped to the car and secured a rifle which had been leaning against the front seat next to his wife. He turned and at a threatening move from Walker fired, he said in the statement. Only one shot was fired.

According to the county attorney, the signed statement also referred to arguments, said by Belflower to have arisen over the fact Walker's son and Belflower's daughter had been going together.

The statement was made after Belflower had been delivered to the county jail at Wheeler by Deputy Sheriff Frank Smith. He was rushed from Shamrock soon after the shooting.

Walker is survived by his widow, one daughter and four sons. The daughter and eldest son live in Oklahoma City, while the other three sons reside at home.
