Wreck injuries kill 11-year-old
Eleven-year-old Refugia [sic] Enriquez Jr. died Monday in Northwest Texas Hospital from injuries he received when he and three other pedestrians were struck by a car Sunday night as they returned home from a stroll to Dairy Queen.
The driver of the car, Abelardo Tijerina, 17, 514 Knight, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and has been released on bond.
The boy's sister, Jannie Enriquez, 22, is hospitalized at Northwest with head injuries.
Also hit, but treated for minor injuries and released were Luse Enriquez, 12, and Angelina Marie Luna, a three-month-old in a stroller, of 608 Bowie.
According to police reports, Tijerina was northbound in the 100 block of Avenue G around 9 p.m. when he hit the four. A witness told police that the Tijerina's vehicle drove on about 100 feet upon the curb before stopping. Another witness jumped out of her car after the accident to help the victims.
Services for Enriquez, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in San Jose Catholic Church with Father James O'Conner officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery under direction of Rix Funeral Home.
Rosary will be recited at Rix Chapel at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Enriquez was born Feb. 13, 1971. He attended Stanton Junior High and was a member of San Jose Catholic Church.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Refugia [sic] Enriquez Sr.; four brothers, Raymond, Robert, Joe and David, all of the home; seven sisters, Margaret, Rosie, Jannie, Connie, Minnie, Linda and Luse, all of the home; and a grandmother, Margaret Enriquez of Harlington.
