HEREFORD - Jose Cruz Herrera, 71, died Friday, April 1, 2011.

Prayer vigil will be at 6 p.m. today in Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Monday in La Iglesia de San Jose with the Rev. David Contreras, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery.

Jose was born May 3, 1939, in Mexico to Sabino and Emerenciana Tarin Herrera. He married Maria Nevarez on Sept. 17, 1961, in Mexico.

Jose had been a resident of Hereford since 2000, moving here from Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico. He was a truck driver for L.S. Sand and Gravel in Vega.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Betty Sanchez, on Feb. 28, 2008; and a son, Gilberto Herrera, in 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Maria; five sons, Juan Herrera of Amarillo, Jose Luis Herrera of Hereford, Jesus E. Herrera of Hart, Cruz S. Herrera of Plainview and Ruben G. Herrera of Parral; four daughters, Alma Acosta of Amarillo, Elva Ramos of Hereford, Luz Ramos of Hart and Norma Soltero of Friona; four brothers, Sabino Herrera of Mexico, Jose Herrera and Gabriel Herrera, both of Hereford, and Ruben Herrera Tarin of Mexico; a sister, Berta Herrera of Mexico; 30 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
