HEREFORD - Orville Gustavus Hill Jr., 83, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in West Park Cemetery in Hereford with the Rev. Robert Field officiating.

He was born on April 3, 1924, in Hereford, the son of the late O.G. Hill Sr. and Bessie May Foster Hill. A farmer, rancher and renowned quarter horse breeder, O.G. was a quiet, intelligent and well-read man who served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. A lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association, O.G. had a keen eye for horseflesh, as was evidenced by his acclaimed stallion, Showdown, and he traveled the nation judging quarter horse shows.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Mitchell Hill, with whom he spent many happy hours dancing; a daughter, Roxanna; and four siblings, Foster Hill, Mozelle Neill, Billie Whisler and Orvella Daniels.

Survivors include four daughters Charlotte Greene of Leander, Kandis Hill of Liberty Hill, Leatha Strickland of Amarillo and Janell Gossett of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren Tara Trevey, Tiffany Epps, Laura Greene-Thibodeaux, Amanda Sauls, Tanya Edwards, Samantha Peterson, Cary Gossett, Teri-Dawn Tiroff and Cory Strickland; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Marine Corps Scholarship Fund, 121 S. Saint Asaph St., Alexandria, VA 22314, www.mcsf.org; Hereford Senior Citizens Center, 426 Ranger St., Hereford, TX 79045; or a favorite charity.
