A grinding, car-pickup collision a mile and a half east of Umbarger on U.S. Highway 60 about 4:45 p.m. Monday fatally injured Hereford dentist, Dr. John Gerald Ketchersid.

Dr. Ketchersid, 58, 811 E. Fourth St., was pronounced dead on arrival at the Neblett Hospital in Canyon.

The Hereford dentist was driving west in his Mercedes Benz sedan when he collided with a pickup driven by John G. Batenhorst, 71, Umbarger, according to Highway Patrolman Gilbert Ray, investigating officer.

Batenhorst had just left his home and was going north across the highway when the pickup was hit by the Ketchersid vehicle in right rear, said Ray.

Damages to the car were placed at $1500 with about $500 in damages being done to the pickup, according to Ray.

Ketchersid's death was ruled accidental by Justice of the Peace W.A. Wilson.

Batenhorst was also taken to the Canyon hospital by members of his family, but his injuries were not believed serious.

Dr. Ketchersid had lived here for the past 10 years after moving to this community from Matador. He was born in Morton, Ga. on July 3, 1903. He was a member of Khiva Temple in Amarillo and a World War I veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Lola of the home; two sons, John of Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., James of Hereford; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Gatlin of Austin and Mrs. R.D. Tilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Theodore of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Mrs. Fred Marburger of Dallas and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services for Dr. Ketchersid will be held in the Rose Chapel of Gililland Funeral Home with the Rev. B.L. Davis officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery.

The date and time of the services will be announced later.
