He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949, a Master of Arts degree in 1952, and a Master of Science degree, all from Hardin-Simmons, and his Ph.D in philosophy from the University of Texas in 1963. He married Martha Elizabeth ‘Beth' Patton in Chillicothe on Sept. 2, 1946, and they taught in Sweetwater, Baird, Austin and Brownfield before moving to Canyon in 1967.
