Clifford was born in Indianapolis, Ind., to the late Frank Leslie Utterback and Effie Ann Utterback. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1935 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1955. During World War II he served in combat on the heavy cruiser USS New Orleans, earning seven battle stars. He liked working with wood, fishing, good music, reading and John Wayne movies on TV. Clifford and Anne Schirmer, a California girl, fell in love. After many months of letter writing and phone calls, he drove out to claim her as his bride and they were married on Jan. 22, 2001. Anne's children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren lovingly embraced him as "Pop" and "Grand Pa Cliff". Clifford was a member of Lakeshore Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, LaJuana Knowles Utterback, and his daughter, Lola Ann Hitt.

Clifford is survived by his wife, Anne, of Woodway; daughter, Patricia Anthony, of Georgetown; son, Bill Utterback and wife, April, of San Antonio; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
