Mr. George Nelson, Jr. a native of New Boston, Texas and a resident of San Diego for over 61 years. He was retired from the City of San Diego Sanitation Department and a Deacon at Pilgrim Progressive Baptist Church in San Diego. Visitation was held on Friday, September 11th from at Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary, San Diego. Services were held on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Pilgrim Baptist Church, San Diego, Dr. Joseph Foxworth, Pastor officiated. Another service with burial will be held later in New Boston under the direction of Haynes Mortuary in Texarkana, Texas.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 11th from 5pm-8pm at Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary. Services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 11AM from the Pilgrim Baptist Church, 4995 "A" Street , Dr. Joseph Foxworth, Pastor and Officiating. Another service with burial will be held later in New Boston under the direction of Haynes Mortuary in Texarkana, Texas.

George Nelson, Jr. was born December 2, 1932 in New Boston, Texas. He was the second of three children born to loving parents, the late George Nelson Sr. and Julia Nelson. His eldest sister, Ella Mae Turner preceded him in death. At the early age of twelve, George accepted Christ as his personal Savior under the pastorate of the late Reverend Shepard Bizzell at Antioch Baptist Church in New Boston. He also received his formal education in New Boston, graduating from Central High School. He continued his education at Prairie View A&M College.

In 1952, while in his second year in college, George was drafted into the United States Navy, where he served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1956.

George later met and married the lovely Evelyn Smith. Shortly afterwards, they moved to San Diego, California where, together they raised ten beautiful children.

George began his employment with the City of San Diego in the Refuse Collection Division as a truck driver and ultimately rose to the position of Supervisor. He retired after thirty-five years of excellent and commendable service.

Following his retirement from the City of San Diego, George decided to work at a place that he and his wife, Evelyn enjoyed. He was employed where “The Turf Meets the Surf”, Del Mar Thorough Breed Club for over twenty years. He was well-known and loved by all those who had the pleasure to encounter him as he went about his work day with a smile and a kind and encouraging word.

Shortly after arriving to San Diego, George and Evelyn united with the Pilgrim Progressive Baptist Church Family under the pastorate of the late Reverend Marvin C. Hines and continued as a dedicated and faithful member under Reverend, Dr. Joseph Foxworth, Sr. George employed his many God given talents in the service of our Lord. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Trustee and President of Brotherhood. He loved his church, his pastor and church family; but above all, he really loved the Lord.

Also preceding him in death was his adoring wife, Evelyn who passed away on April 28, 2005.

On Sunday, September 6, 2015, George Nelson, Jr. departed this life. He leaves to mourn his passing, five sons, James of Terrell, TX Robert of New Boston, TX, Mark of Texarkana, TX, Talmadge (Adria) of Turlock, CA and Michael (Danielle) of San Diego, CA; five daughters, Shirley of Texarkana, TX, Kathy (Rogers), Evelyn, Vicky (TJ) and Beverly all residing in San Diego, CA; sister, Thelma Nelson of New Boston, TX; twenty-seven grandchildren, thirty two great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, his nieces, nephews, other relatives, his church family and a host of loving friends.
