"A DEPLORABLE TRAGEDY.
A Father Attempts to Kill His Children, Then Shoots Himself.
BELDEN, Tex., June 9.-A sad and bloody tragedy happened at Bryant's Mill, in Cass county, yesterday. George Whetstone, a business man of that place, in a fit of derangement, attempted to kill his children, a lovely little girl and boy. The instrument used was a hatchet and inflicted a ghastly wound on the heads of both children. After his bloody work, he ended his own life with a pistol shot through the heart. The only reason known for the act was left by him in a note to his wife, in which he said he had no hopes of ever being successful in life and did not want to remain on earth. He desired that his effects might be divided between his children if they recovered. When found Whetstone was stiff and cold in death. His little girl had crawled upon his breast and was unconscious. Whetstone was not in good health which probably caused his derangement.
The little girl was 4 years old, the boy 18 months. He had many relatives and friends in this place and much sympathy is expressed."
