Charles J. W. Mercer served as 2nd Lieutenant in Captain W. R. Kelley's Regiment and in Confederate States Volunteer Infantry in 1862, became ill and resigned. In 1862, he joined Col. Walter P. Lane's Regiment, Texas Volunteer Calvary, two years.
