Conrad was born in either Brooklyn or Manhattan, New York to Henry and Fredericke Ernestine Schweighofer. After the death of his parents, he and his brother, Fred, were sent on the Orphan Train to Van Alstyne, Texas to be adopted by RS Fulton.
At the age of 14, Conrad left school to become a printer with his brother at the Van Alstyne Leader newspaper that was owned by their adopted father.
In 1908, Fred and a coworker got into an argument. Fred was killed in front of Conrad and Mr. Fulton. Both men had to testify in court.
Conrad grew up to be a respectable member of Van Alstyne. He is buried at Van Alstyne Cemetery beside Fred.
