William Franklin Mathews, son of James Pinkney Mathews was born 4 September 1840, in Georgia was destined to become one of the leading pioneers and merchants of Cass County.

William Franklin served in the Confederate army during the Civil War.
Upon his father's death in 1865 he farmed the land he had inherited from his father.
He married Harriet India Sharp in 1867. His wife was the daughter of Jehu Harris Sharp of Lodi, Texas.
In 1877, William Franklin Mathews and his wife moved to the new town of Queen City, then just being established. There, he and his brother, Joseph Mathews, established a general merchandise store. Joseph soon decided he wanted to be a physician and sold his interest to his brother-in-law, S.J. Hood. The firm was known as Mathews & Hood and operated for seventeen years, until 1895.
William built one of the first homes in Queen City in 1878. This home was, and still is, one of the show places of Queen City. It was awarded a Texas Historic Medallion in 1973, and in 1977 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
