Elias and his father joined the Confederate States Army August 4, 1863 in Atlanta, Georgia. They served together in Company K, 66th Georgia Infantry Regiment. His father died with a heart attack in 1864. Elias recovered from pneumonia and was with Johnston's Army when he surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, April 26, 1865.
