Shirley Bruce, 55, a homemaker, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, in Grand Prairie.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Tate Springs Baptist Church in Arlington. Burial: Pulaski Cemetery in New Boston. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Moore Funeral Home, Bowen Road Chapel.
Shirley Bruce was born Jan. 20, 1944, in Clarendon, Ark. As a child, she moved with her family to Fort Worth. She was a 1962 graduate of Paschal High School. She was a graduate of Howard Payne University in Brownwood, and she attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 1966-68, Shirley served as a missionary Journeyman in Ghana, Africa, through the Foreign Mission Board of The Southern Baptist Convention. After her marriage to Joe W. Bruce on Aug. 9, 1969, they continued their preparation for missionary service. The Bruces were annointed missionaries by the Foreign Mission Board in 1971, to serve in Central America. They lived in Honduras and Guatemala. For almost 30 years, the Bruces served in a variety of missionary activities. They retired from overseas service in 1998. At that time, they settled in Grand Prairie.
Since returning from the mission field, Mrs. Bruce continued to be active in Christian service to others. She was involved through her local church, serving as a volunteer with Community Hospice Service of Fort Worth, and as president-elect of the Woman's Missionary Union of the Tarrant Baptist Association.
Shirley Bruce went to be with her Lord and Savior on Christmas Day 1999.
She was preceded in death by parents, William Marshall and Oma Marie Plumlee; brothers, William S. Plumlee of Jena, La., Marshall A. Plumlee; and sister, Patricha G. Mayo of New Boston.
