SAN JUAN, TX - Calvin Robert Welch, age 85, passed away July 3, 2013 at his residence in San Juan, his home for 43 years. He was born on April 21, 1928 in Hanover, Kansas to O.D. and Lelia Fern (Waggoner) Welch. Both O.D. and Fern were long time residents of Washington, KS where O.D. was the city US mail carrier.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of many years, Jean Gilles.
Survivors include his three brothers and spouses.
Mr. Welch was raised in Washington, KS and graduated from Washington High School in 1946. Calvin went to technical school in Omaha, Nebraska until 1950 when he was drafted into the US Army serving in Germany during the Korean War.
Upon returning from Germany, Calvin attended college at Oklahoma State and graduated with a diploma in electronics. After graduation he worked with aviation electronics for Boeing and Learjet in Wichita, KS. In the late-60's Calvin moved to South Texas where he started his own X-Ray machine business and later worked for the State of Texas as a radiation control officer. He retired from the State of Texas in 1995.
Calvin was a 45 year member of the American Legion and was Post Commander of Post 101 of Pharr at the time of his passing. Calvin enjoyed working with and supporting military servicemen as Post Commander on four different occasions. He particularly enjoyed the camaraderie of the members of the American Legion. Calvin's favorite Legion member activity was serving in the Funeral Service Detail to respect fellow fallen military heroes.
Memorial services for Calvin will be held at Post 101 on a later date to be announced. He will be interred at the RGV Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Mission with full military honors. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Pharr.
