James William Chowning, and his family are listed in the "History of Jack County Texas" as some of the early settlers of Cundiff, Texas.

At least two of his daughters married into well known, and respected Jack County families.
Nancy Anna Lena met Edgar Ernest Ellis while he was working on the Cherryhome Ranch with her father. Edgar's father, W I Ellis built the first bathhouse in Wizard Wells, Texas (then known as Vineyard). Mabel married Roy Ernest Dennis, owner of the Jacksboro Gazette.
