Dr. Shirley Sharpe Finn, 80, is remembered for her lifelong commitment to nursing, nursing education, her burden for fairness for all people and being a true Southern lady. She was the first black faculty member of Texarkana College and the first black to be named a department chair at TC.
Soon after arriving in Texarkana, Finn was hired as the first black nurse in the operating room at Wadley Hospital, Presley said. Later, she became a school nurse for Texarkana Independent School District, followed by a stint as the Miller County public health nurse. By 1966, she was hired as a nursing instructor at Texarkana College.
