Major (Ret.) Thomas H. "Tom" Plummer died Friday, March 27, 2009 at his home.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009 at the Eula United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Carlin officiating. Military graveside rites followed at the Eula Cemetery, directed by Bailey Funeral Home of Clyde.
Tom was born February 28, 1939, to R.R. "Bob" Plummer and Vivien Hewett Plummer in Galveston, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tom had presided in Abilene for the past 33 years. He was equally proud of being a Texas Aggie (Class of ‘61), and of being a C-130 pilot in the United States Air Force for more than 20 years. He began his Air Force career at Fort Pope, North Carolina, and was assigned to duty in California, Vietnam, Thailand, and Hawaii before retiring at Dyess AFB in Abilene.
He was renowned for his ability "to land his plane on a postage stamp." He was a pilot's pilot, and would regale friends, old and new with war stories and exploits of his military career.
Following his retirement from active duty. Tom spent 16 years as a pilot instructor in the C-130 simulator at Dyess. He trained many young pilots, all of whom benefited from his flying expertise. Nothing made him prouder than to receive compliments and thank yous from his students.
Tom was an officer and a gentleman. He was generous and kind-hearted. He loved reading stories to his young grandsons. He had an outgoing personality, and never met a stranger. He loved football and spent numerous sweat-drenched hours quarterbacking from his favorite chair.
He was a life-long Methodist, and was most recently a member of the Eula United Methodist Church.
He was much loved and will be missed by his family and friends.
Survivors are his wife, Robbye of Abilene; a brother, R.R. (Bob) Plummer, Jr. of Benbrook, TX; son, Christopher Plummer of Buda, TX; daughter, Cynthia Resor of San Antonio; stepchildren, Daryl Wilde of Eula, Mike Wilde of Eula and Tiffany Wilde of Abilene; nine grandchildren.
