Wayman Swopes, 66, of Midland, made his change of address from Greenwood to Heaven on Friday, October 15, 2010. The family will receive friends from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral & Crematory in Midland. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm, Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Greenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Allan Strickland, officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
Wayman was born October 27, 1943. He was raised and attended schools in Portales, NM. He attended Eastern New Mexico University. He graduated from Clear Creek Baptist School in Pineville, KY in 1972. Wayman pastored churches in Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico and Texas. He retired from pastoring, as senior pastor at Greenwood Baptist Church, in April, 2010. He served at Greenwood Baptist Church for 23 years. Wayman considered it a joy and honor to serve the Lord and gave God the glory throughout his illness.
Survivors include wife, Leona of Greenwood; son Stacy Swopes and wife Terra of Kansas City, Kansas; daughter Laura Dawn Swopes of Midland; son Jason Swopes and wife Johna of Greenwood; sister Lavon Elrod of Portales, NM; seven grandchildren, Chance Pevehouse, Colton Pevehouse, Rachel Swopes, Treyman Swopes, Ivan Swopes, Joshua Swopes and Jenna Swopes; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Essie Swopes and 4 brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Greenwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 10909 FM 307, Midland, TX 79706.
