*HAGERTY FAMILY OVERVIEW

Haggerty Family Cemetery
Harrison County,
Texas

This cemetery is on private land. The land was once the Phoenix Plantation and owned by Rebecca (McIntosh) Hawkins Hagerty. She was a daughter of the Creek Indian Chief William McIntosh. On the 1860 census, she owned 99 slaves and was worth $85,000.00, making her one of the richest people in Texas. She owned other plantations in the area, her and her two sisters. In 1915, Lady Bird Johnson's father Mr. T. J. Taylor bought the property. The current owner is a former Texas State Congressman. He and his family own a timber company. They are well aware of the importance of this cemetery. Oil companies also drill on their land. The cemetery area also has the largest known Willow Oak in Texas. You will not be able to gain access to this cemetery.
