Ernest "Diamond Dick" ST. LEON

Concordia Cemetery
El Paso County,
Texas

1859 - August 31, 1898 - Ysleta, TX
St. Leon was known as one of the Texas Ranger;s finest undercover officer. His fellow officers gave him the nickname because of his fondness for wearing diamonds on his clothing.
In August of 1898, Ernest and Dr. Oscar Breaux were involved in a running gunfight on horseback with three horse thieves. Dr. Breaux was shot in the head early in the battle and died instantly. Ernest shot one of the bandits in the hip and then received a bullet himself that went through his left shoulder and one lung. His wound was mortal and he died after reaching Ysleta. The rangers captured the outlaws responsible for the death of the two men.
