Selman was a noted lawman and gunman. Tried for the murder of John Wesley Hardin after shooting him in the back of the head, the jury voted 10 to 2 for acquittal. Before the second trial could be held, Selman got drunk on Easter Sunday, ran into George Scarborough, an argument ensued and Selman received four bullets and didn't need another trial. Scarborough was tried and acquitted.
