Funeral services for Gary Brammer, 90, of Gainesville, are set for 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Whaley United Methodist Church, with Dr. Charles L. Aaron officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home. A visitation will be held at 7:00 pm at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home on Monday, September 10, 2012.
Gary was born on April 22, 1922 in Aurora, Wise County, Texas to Garrett Hobert Brammer, Sr. and Rondeau McCluney. He passed away on September 8, 2012 in Denton.
Gary married Billie Couch at the Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton. He graduated from the University of North Texas with a degree in Business of Business Administration. In 1960, he moved from Denton, Texas to Gainesville and in 1970, with his son, Larry, founded Brammer Pipe and Steel. He was a member of Whaley United Methodist Church for 52 years. He served as Mayor Pro-tem on the Gainesville City Council, President of the Texoma Regional Planning Commission, and President of the Optimist Club.
During WWII, he served in the Army Air Corp as a P-51 fighter pilot in Europe. On VE Day, against orders, he flew his plane under the Eiffel Tower. He obtained the rank of Major before retiring from the Air Force National Guard in 1962. On his 85th birthday, the Major spent 1 1/2 hours flying the B-2 Stealth Bomber simulator at Tinker Air Force Base; his only comment was, "This doesn't fly like my P-51". His son replied, "Dad, it's a bomber and it has no tail!" The engineer in charge of the simulator said that he was the best who had flown the simulator.
Gary is survived by his wife Billie Brammer of Gainesville; son Gary Michael Brammer of Norman, OK.; son Larry Robert Brammer of Gainesville; son Steven Ross Brammer and his wife Nancy of Katy; grandchildren Christopher Brammer of Gainesville, FL, Lauren Turner of Gainesville, Maddie Guthrie of Lake Kiowa, Matt Brammer of Burleson, and Beth Robinson of Pearland; great-grandchildren Layton and Marlow Turner, and Gavin and Garrison Brammer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Arleen Morrison; brother Bobby Brammer; and brother Jerry Brammer.
Pallbearers will be Lauren Turner, Matt Brammer, Beth Robinson, Chris Brammer, Jared Robinson, and Aaron Gutherie.
Memorial contributions may be made to Home Hospice of Cooke County or Whaley United Methodist Church.
