Joseph was partners with Jesse West in a saloon establishment in Indian Territory, Potawatomie County, Oklahoma. The saloon was known as the "Corner Saloon," and was the scene of many killings. A U.S. Marshall, Gus Bobbitt, forced them to leave the county on account of some crooked deals. They sold the business and moved to West Texas buying many acres of the cheap panhandle land near Canadian, Texas. The land soon became valuable making Allen and West wealthy cattleman. Joseph purchased acreage near Ada, Oklahoma, and near Farmington, New Mexico.
Joe was one of the four people hung from the rafters in an old barn in Ada, Oklahoma. The others were the notorious James Brown "Killing Jim" Miller, Jesse Allen, buried near Joe and D. B. Burrell.
