Leona M. Elkins, 67, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2010, at her residence in Anson. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Bethel Assembly in Anson. Burial will follow in the Double Mountain Cemetery in Stonewall County, directed by Abilene Funeral Home. Mrs. Elkins was born August 3, 1943 in Funston to the late Lorene and Kenneth Earl McCoy Sr. She and Freddy M. Elkins were married April 16, 1960 in Abilene. He passed away on May 15, 2010. Mrs. Elkins started her law enforcement career in 1974 in Stonewall County and later in Jones County as a deputy. In Jones county she taught D.A.R.E. to the area youth. She retired in 2008 as the 911 Coordinator for Jones County. Survivors include three sons, Freddy Wayne and Kellye Elkins of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Sammy Myers and Shelia Elkins of Merkel and John Wesley Elkins of Plainview, Texas; two daughters, Thressa and Ronny Stewart of Anson and LeeAnn and Michael Diaz of Merkel; a brother, Kenneth Earl McCoy Jr. of Abilene; two sisters, Martha McCoy Nigro and Elwanda McCoy Hoffman, both of Abilene; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Elkins was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Delania Elkins Abbott, a sister, Barbara McCoy Boyd Trapley and a nephew, Jimmy Justin Hoffman. A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Freddy M. Elkins, 69, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Hendrick Medical Center. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Merkel with Brother Bill Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Double Mountain Cemetery, directed by Abilene Funeral Home. Mr. Elkins was born October 13, 1940, in Peacock, Texas to the late John Wesley and Johnnie Elkins. He and Leona were married April 16, 1960, in Abilene. Mr. Elkins was a mechanic for many years before he went into law enforcement. He was a deputy sheriff in Stonewall and Jones County, a patrol officer for the City of Anson, police chief in Hawley, Public Works Director of Anson until his retirement in 1998. Survivors include his wife, Leona Elkins of Merkel; three sons, Freddy Wayne Elkins (Kellye) of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Sammy Myers Elkins (Shelia) of Merkel and John Wesley Elkins of Plainview, Texas; two daughters, Thressa Stewart (Ronny) of Anson and LeeAnn Diaz (Michael) of Merkel; a brother, Calton Elkins of Bella Vista, Arkansas; a sister, Sue Bradshaw of Hawley; a special nephew, Truman Ray Elkins of Springtown, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Elkins was preceded in death by two brothers, Truman Elkins and Dearl Elkins; a granddaughter, Delania Elkins Abbott; and his father and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Lorene McCoy. A visitation will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Abilene Funeral Home, 3349 N. 12th Street.
