Mrs. Mildred Hoch, age 93, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, May 24th at home in Kerrville. Just a little over 6 weeks after the death of her husband of 75 years, Troy Hoch. Aunt Mildred was the only child of Nannie Mae and Eugene Penn Newsom. She was born in Yoakum, Texas on July 17, 1920 and graduated from Yoakum High School in 1937.
We loved to hear her tell us about how she met Uncle Troy. They met on a blind date. The other couple, did not show up, so Uncle Troy came to her home and knocked on her door, she decided to go, since he has the most gorgeous black hair, she had even seen. They were never apart after that. It was during the Depression, she was working at the Yoakum Tannery, making 9 cents an hour and he was farming tomatoes. They married May 13, 1939 in Yoakum, she had saved $100 and so had he. Her motto was only spend half of what you make. When she was a little girl, her mother would give her a dime, and she always only spent a nickel. During the Depression it was hard times for everyone, she never forgot seeing people lined up at the Tannery hoping for work everyday. She always felt so blessed she was able to work everyday.
Aunt Mildred was an extremely talented woman, and a business woman many years before women where allowed any say in the business part of any company. She was an extremely talented seamstress and avid gardener, saving many of her own seeds to be replanted the next year.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Penn & Nannie Newsom, and the love of life, husband of 75 years, Troy Hoch. Also her brothers-in-laws and sister-in-laws; Forest & Blanche Hoch, Floyd & Ida Hoch, John Junior and Mildred Hoch, one nephew Donald Hoch.
