FLOWER MOUND — A 14-year-old driver who was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Flower Mound Road had taken the pick-up truck without his father’s permission, police said Friday.

Drake Buchanan, a freshman at Flower Mound High School, was trapped in the burning truck after it veered off the road early Thursday and struck a tree, police said. He did not have a driver's license, police said.

The four teen-age passengers survived the crash. Joseph Schaefer, 15, and Hunter McGee, 14, were critically injured. One of them suffered severe burns, police said.

Two twin sisters — Christina and Colena Kuhlmann, both 14 — suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. Their conditions were unavailable Friday morning.

According to preliminary police reports, Buchanan was speeding when he lost control of the pick-up. Other factors in the crash included faulty evasive action by Buchanan and his inattention to the road, according to preliminary reports.

Police have not determined how fast he was going. The speed limit on Flower Mound Road is 40 mph.

Alcohol was not listed as a factor in the wreck.

A can of beer was found in the 1994 Ford Ranger, police said Friday. “We’re still waiting on toxicology results, but the victim’s father has said that the beer and a cooler were in the truck before his son took it,” said Paul Boon, a spokesman for the Flower Mound Police Department.

McGee, Schaefer and Christina Kuhlmann were taken by helicopter ambulance to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Colena Khulmann was taken to the same hospital by ground ambulance.

On Friday, authorities continued investigating where the teens had been all night before the accident, which occurred about 3 a.m. Thursday in the 3700 block of Flower Mound Road near Furlong Drive.

Buchanan was driving west when he lost control of the pick-up, veered off the road and hit a tree, police said. When firefighters and paramedics arrived, Buchanan was trapped in the truck, and the four passengers were outside the vehicle, police said.
