When Samuel Jonathan James was born on April 1, 1899, in Navarro, Texas, his father, William, was 29 and his mother, Ruth, was 24. He had two sons and one daughter with Velma Caroline Butler between 1919 and 1926. He died on October 28, 1965, in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 66.
