When Benjamin Rice Downes was born on August 9, 1890, in Alabama, his father, James, was 42 and his mother, Frances, was 35. He married Eva Mae Flemming on January 21, 1912, in Falls, Texas. They had nine children in 27 years. He died on February 22, 1972, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 81, and was buried there.
