When Ervin Elwood Best was born on December 10, 1892, in Gatewood, Missouri, his father, William, was 51 and his mother, Sarah, was 23. He married Nettie Jane Wilkinson in July 1913. They had six children during their marriage. He died on April 28, 1962, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 69.
