January 5, 1888 - December 10, 1929
RUBY ODELL BRYARLY-MINTER was born on 5 January 1887 in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas, and was the daughter of Silas W. Bryarly (1856-1939) & Adalade G. Hargrove (1857-1925). Ruby worked as a Public School Teacher in Linden, Cass County, TX before she married. She was raised in the Baptist Church where she became a member at the age of 12. However, she converted to the Methodist faith after she married Emmett Minter.
Ruby Odell Bryarly married Emmett Bascom Minter on 8 September 1907 in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, TX. They had 7 Children:
Sylvan Minter (1908-1909),
Elkin "Ockin" Margaret Minter (1909-1996),
Florrie Ruth Minter-Hargrave (1911-1974),
Doris Evelyn Minter-Moore-Stewart (1915-2006),
Howard Bryarly Minter (1917-1987),
Ralph Minter (1921-2012),
Jean Elizabeth Minter-Highfield (1926-1995).
Ruby's ancestors founded the towns of Bryarly, Rowland, and Mound City in Red River County, Texas. The Bryarly's immigrated from England to Maryland in 1743, then into Virgina in 1774 where her ancestors supported the American Revolution, and arrived in Texas in 1839 when it was still a Republic.
Ruby died on 10 December 1929. Her family was terribly heartbroken to lose her at such an early age. She is remembered as a kind and generous Christian in the community, and all who knew her felt grace in her presence. Ruby's death certificate states she passed away from complications of pneumonia. However her daughter, Doris Minter-Stewart, believed Ruby suffered from undiagnosed breast cancer and the pneumonia was a condition resulting from a long battle impairing her immune system. Ruby's mother Addie passed away from breast cancer, and two of Ruby's daughters had full mastectomies due to breast cancer.
