When James Fred Gibson was born on February 5, 1883, in Iredell, North Carolina, his father, Claudius, was 22 and his mother, Martha, was 22. He married Annie Octavia Davis on October 23, 1907, in Collin, Texas. They had nine children in 13 years. He died on January 24, 1961, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 77.
