When Gerald Hamilton Gillum was born on August 16, 1909, in Oklahoma, his father, Esten, was 22 and his mother, Martha, was 20. He married Ruth Frances Prince on June 14, 1927, in Wise, Texas. They had one child during their marriage. He died on July 23, 1980, in Wilbarger, Texas, at the age of 70, and was buried in Vernon, Texas.
