Walter Don Russell, or Don, as he was known by so many, left this earth to be with his Lord on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at McAllen Medical Center. He was born September 28, 1925 to Walter Earl and Wilma Belle [Long] Russell in Wichita, Kansas. When World War II began Don enlisted in the U. S. Navy.
Preceding Don in death are his parents; two brothers, Earl Russell and Rex Russell and two sisters, Evelyn [Russell] Magruder and Florence Russell. Don is survived by his wife Opal Russell of Pharr, Texas; two sons, Ronald Russell (Hermelinda) of Aransas Pass, Texas, Mark Russell (Linda) of Mission, Texas and three daughters, Marlina [Russell] Jones (Donald) of Neosho, Missouri, Lavanda [Russell] Donnell of Richmond, Texas, and Deanna [Russell] Carter (Gator) of Saltillo Mexico. Also surviving are twenty grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 29, 2019 at Family Life Ministries in Weslaco, Texas. Rev. Ron Martin of Katy, Texas officaited.
Interment was at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas. Military auspices were under the direction of Sgt. Benito Alaniz, VFW Post 7473 of Elsa, Texas.
The family had asked in lieu of flowers make donations to Big Heart Orphanage and Benito Juarez Children's Home in care of 119 W. Gore Ave., Pharr, Texas 78577.
Arrangements were under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco, Inc.
