William (Bill) Glen Briggs, 73, lost his battle with COPD on April 17, 2019, which he so valiantly struggled with the past few years. He was born July 4, 1945, in Galesburg, Illinois, to Charles D. Briggs and Shirley Huggins Briggs, and resided in Maquon, Illinois. He graduated in 1963 from Spoon River Valley High School, Fairview, Illinois. He received an Associate of Applied Science in General Management from El Paso Community College, El Paso, Texas, in 1986.

Bill served in the U.S.Army from November 15, 1965 to January 26, 1971 and from February 28, 1972 to retirement on August 31, 1992. His most notable assignment was on the East/West German Border from 1986 - 1991. During that time, he was First Sergeant of I Troop, 3rd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Bad Hersfeld, West Germany. He was promoted to Command Sergeant Major in 1987, and he served with Combat Support Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fulda, West Germany and with 3rd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Bad Hersfeld, West Germany, when the Iron Curtain fell from Communist control on November 9, 1989. He retired August 31, 1992 and resided in Brandenburg, Kentucky, until May 2002, when they moved to the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Billie Jean Briggs Nau; his sister, Janet Briggs Wallick; and his brother, Charles (Sonny) Briggs. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Lashbrook Cadwell Briggs; a son, William Briggs II (Sara) of Nicholasville, Kentucky, a step-daughter; Cynthia Cadwell Comins (Matthew), Waterford, Michigan; and a step-son, Sergeant First Class (Retired) Richard Cadwell (Amanda), Brandenburg, Kentucky; his brothers, James Briggs, Severns, Maryland, and Judson Briggs, Green Valley, Arizona; 12 grandchildren, and 8 great- grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, on Friday, May 3, 2019, at the Rio Grande Valley State Veteran's Cemetery with a Celebration of Life to follow at Brook Ridge Retirement Community.
