Velma Zula Fisher Cross, 99, of Amarillo did Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel with the Rev. Don Travis officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Darrouzett Cemetery in Darrouzett. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St.

Mrs. Cross was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Haskall, Okla., to Rufus C. and Anna Maude Lash Fisher. She was a longtime resident of Darrouzett, and a homemaker, mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Cross was raised in Darrouzett and graduated from high school in Memphis. She married her best friend, Merle Simon Cross, on Feb. 6, 1936, in Darrouzett, and they were constant companions until his death in 2007.

Mrs. Cross was a charter member of First Methodist Church in Darrouzett. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir for many years. Her hobbies were oil and porcelain painting, ceramics, sewing, making crafts, gardening and cooking. One of her joys was her grandchildren, and she loved having tea parties with them.

Mrs. Cross was initiated into the Order of Eastern Star on May 26, 1939, and was a member for 72 years. During her years of membership, she served as Worthy Matron of Darrouzett Chapter No. 790, joined Perryton Chapter No. 161, and was a member of Amarillo Chapter No. 787. She held many appointments in Grand Chapter of Texas, including serving as grand representative to the state of Utah in 1990. Mrs. Cross was an active member of Darrouzett United Methodist Church, Lipscomb County Historical Society, a former Girl Scout leader, Darrouzett Senior Citizens Association, American Rose Society, Porcelain Arts Club and HEO Club. In Amarillo, she was an associate member of Saint Stephen United Methodist Church and Pathfinders Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband and five brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Cross and wife Dolores and Stephen Cross and wife Suellen, all of Amarillo; a daughter, Marilyn Maynard and husband Ken of Canyon; two brothers, Roy Roper of Flower Mound and Vernon Roper of Italy, Texas; four granddaughters, Barbara German and husband Rick of College Station, Mary Barton and husband Jonathan of Driftwood, Wendy Shaheen and husband Louis of Granbury and Michelle Dear and husband Dan of Canyon; two grandsons, Scott Maynard of Canyon and Mark Cross of Houston; five great-grandsons, Cory Bigham of Humble, Branson Thomas and Christopher Barton, both of Driftwood, and Cadence Maynard and Hudson Dear, both of Canyon; two great-granddaughters, Breanna Homer and husband Trent of McAlester, Okla., and Hadley Dear of Canyon; a great-great-grandson, Shane Homer of McAlester, Okla.; and a great-stepgrandson, Parker Dear of San Angelo.

The family suggests memorials to be to Pathfinders Sunday school class of Saint Stephen United Methodist Church, 4600 S. Western St., Amarillo, TX 79109; or Legacy Scholarship Program, in care of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn St., Dallas, TX 75219.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
