When Lamer Ellis Mayes was born on February 8, 1886, in Anniston, Alabama, his father, Reuben, was 24 and his mother, Sarah, was 26. He married Mattie Etta Bryan on November 29, 1908, in Paris, Texas. They had six children in 14 years. He died on December 29, 1953, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 67, and was buried there.
