When Mary Ethel Howard was born on February 3, 1894, in Wise, Texas, her father, John, was 43, and her mother, Lillian, was 36. She married Emmett William Smith in 1912 in her hometown. They had four children during their marriage. She died on February 2, 1969, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 74.

When Emmett Smith was born on April 25, 1892, in Greenwood, Texas, his father, Hiram, was 33 and his mother, Juliean, was 33. He had four children with Mary Ethel Howard. He then married Dora Trixy Karr and they had two children together. He then married Lavaga Mitchell Davis and they had one son together. He died on November 20, 1965, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 73, and was buried there.
