James Jacob Kilgore, the son of William Kilgore and Jean Jane Henderson-Kilgore, born on the 17th of April in 1812, in Green County, Tennessee. James had 13 brothers and sisters.
James married Mary C. Martin in 1842. They moved from Tennessee to Gainsville, Cooke County, Texas. They together had 5 children, Elizabeth, Laura, William, Fielding and Hugh Kilgore, all born in Cooke County, Texas.
