When John Walter Baker was born on May 16, 1884, in Seymour, Missouri, his father, Thomas, was 26 and his mother, Lillie, was 16. He married Ora Mae Thomas on August 30, 1904, in Canadian, Oklahoma. They had nine children in 19 years. He died on February 6, 1961, in Vernon, Texas, at the age of 76, and was buried there.
