He and Ben Thompson fought for Maximilian in Mexico after the Civil War. In 1870 he and Thompson opened and operated the Bull's Head Saloon in Abilene, KS. Thompson left Abilene in 1871, leaving the Bull's Head to Coe. Coe was often at odds with Abilene Marshall James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok. Both sought the attentions of local prostitute Jessie Hazell. Finally, Hickok shot Coe in a gun battle on the streets of Abilene, Oct. 5, 1871. Coe died four days later, the last man killed by Hickok before his own demise at the hands of Jack McCall, Aug. 7, 1876, in Deadwood, SD.
