James Washington Dunn was born on April 27, 1877, in Love, Oklahoma, the son of William. He had three children with Sarah K Sallie Sally Porter (1878–1937). He died on June 5, 1961, in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 84, and was buried in Vernon, Texas.
