William J. "Bill" Thorne, 80, of Amarillo died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Batson and the Rev. Chester O'Brien officiating. Private burial will be Thursday in Lipscomb Cemetery in Lipscomb. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Longtime Amarillo ISD and New Mexico administrator, William J. Thorne, 80, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006.

Mr. Thorne was born to William Quincey and Ruby Minerva Thorne in Spearman. He married Katy Bussard in 1945 in the Locust Grove community in Lipscomb County. They graduated from Canadian High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Thorne received a B.S. and a master's degree from West Texas State University and an Ed.S. degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

He was an elementary principal at Springlake Earth schools, a high school principal in San Jon, N.M., and the superintendent of Grady, N.M., schools. He opened Paramount Terrace School in Amarillo in 1956 and was principal there for 20 years. He then taught at Tascosa High School and West Texas State University and taught senior English at Boys Ranch High School. He also served as principal at Lamar School in AISD.

He taught Sunday school classes at First Baptist Church for many years. He was busy in the Boy Scouts, Kids, Inc., and "Y" ball. He worked in the HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) Program in Palo Duro High School and Horace Mann Middle School.

He touched many lives in New Mexico and the Panhandle of Texas. He and his wife toured all the continents in the world except Antarctica before he became ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Katy Thorne; two sons, Stanley Charles Thorne of Amarillo and Steve Thorne and wife Jessie of Covington; five grandchildren, Adam, Stephen, Lauren, Daniel and Rebekah; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity or The American Family Justice Project, 3440 Bell St., Suite 320, PMB 332, Amarillo, TX 79109-4147.

The family will receive visitors from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
